Opening lines: Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve

Mortal Engines, Philip Reeve

I am so thoroughly impressed with this novel (though I confess I am only two chapters into it) – there is no way it can go wrong, with an opening sentence like this:

It was a dark, blustery afternoon in spring, and the city of London was chasing a small mining town across the dried-out bed of the old North Sea.
