‘Speculative fiction’ covers a whole lot of stuff–science fiction, fantasy, weird fiction, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, horror, and alternate history. This blog is an outlet for my book reviews and musings, and a place to collate news and updates on anything relating to these genres.
My interest in speculative fiction was latent until my twenties, when I became completely obsessed and ended up writing on PhD thesis related to the topic (on the rather obscure late prose romances of William Morris, and how these works can be positively re-evaluated and re-examined within the critical discourse of the modern fantasy genre: Inventing fantasy: the prose romances of William Morris).
I support the speculative literature community through my volunteer role as a juror for the Speculative Literature Foundation’s travel grant awards, and I’ve been a judge for the Aurealis Awards, which recognise the achievements of Australian science fiction, fantasy and horror writers. The job that actually pays my bills is nowhere near as much fun!
It’s almost inevitable that I own a cat. She’s named Pixel Juice, after Jeff Noon’s collection of short stories.
